How Gold-Coated Insulated Needles Reduce Epidermal Damage in RF Treatments

Gold RF Microneedling, also known as Gold Radiofrequency Microneedling, is a cutting-edge treatment that combines the benefits of microneedling and radiofrequency energy. The term "gold" refers to the golden coating on the microneedles, giving them a unique appearance and enhancing their effectiveness in treatment.

How It Works

During the procedure, the doctor adjusts the depth of the microneedles and radiofrequency energy based on the specific skin concerns and treatment areas. The treatment uses an electronic system to control the process, with dozens of insulated microneedles rapidly penetrating the skin's surface. Radiofrequency energy is emitted from the needle tips and then quickly retracted, creating a continuous cycle until the treatment is complete. Afterward, specialized products are applied to aid recovery.

This controlled damage prompts the body's healing response, stimulating the release of ACME-TEA at the wound edges to repair the epidermal base. In the deeper layers of the skin, this energy fosters skin regeneration, boosting collagen production and leaving the skin looking brighter and smoother.

Gold Insulated Needles

Microneedles in the market generally come in two types: insulated and non-insulated. Non-insulated needles apply heat across the entire needle length, which can result in burns if the heat becomes too intense. In contrast, Gold RF Microneedling uses insulated needles coated with gold, which allows the energy to be concentrated at the tip of the needle. This design ensures that the heat does not damage the epidermis, even when high energy levels are used.

Comparing with Other Technologies

Popular technologies such as Fractional CO2 Laser, Erbium Glass Laser, RF treatments, and High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) have been used to treat skin aging. However, they come with higher risks of pigmentation, burns, and scarring. In comparison, Gold RF Microneedling (FMR) causes minimal damage to the epidermal barrier and melanocytes, making it a safer alternative for deeper skin rejuvenation.

Treatment Depth and Parameters

The penetration depth of the microneedles varies based on skin thickness: for delicate areas like the periorbital region and forehead, the depth is between 0.50 and 0.80 mm, while for thicker areas such as the temples, cheeks, and jawline, the depth can range from 0.80 to 2.50 mm. The radiofrequency energy settings range from 12.5 to 150.0 W, depending on the skin type and treatment goals.

For the most effective treatment results, it is recommended to undergo three sessions with a one-month interval. The third session typically shows the best results, with the lower face responding better than the upper face. While Botulinum Toxin (Botox) may provide quicker results (1–2 days post-treatment), FMR takes 3–6 weeks to show results, but the effects last significantly longer, with FMR results lasting at least six months compared to Botox's 3–4 months.

Acne and Acne Scar Treatment

FMR penetrates deep enough to reach the sebaceous glands, helping to regulate sebum production. This can also break up deep scars, stimulate collagen remodeling, reduce localized inflammation, and limit abnormal blood vessel growth. FMR is highly effective in treating inflammatory acne, persistent deep acne scars (such as ice-pick or boxcar scars), and rosacea. Studies show that after 28 days of treatment, collagen and elastic fibers increase, gradually replacing the degenerated collagen, improving scar appearance.

For acne scar treatment, microneedle penetration should range from 1.00 to 3.00 mm, with radiofrequency energy levels set between 5.0 and 7.5 W for less severe cases, and up to 17.5–20.0 W for active lesions such as pimples and pustules.

Stretch Marks Treatment

Stretch marks (Striae Distensae or SD), also known as atrophic scars, are caused by skin stretching and can appear as either early red stretch marks (Striae Rubrae) or late white stretch marks (Striae Albae). FMR works by stimulating collagen production and promoting skin remodeling. When combined with CO2 fractional laser treatment, it shows superior results compared to either treatment alone.

The treatment parameters for stretch marks involve microneedle penetration depths of 1.50–3.00 mm and radiofrequency energy from 10.0 to 22.5 W, with a treatment interval of around 4 weeks for the best outcomes.

Post-Treatment Care

  1. Cleansing: Before treatment, the skin should be thoroughly cleaned.
  2. Promote Circulation: Apply a numbing cream and cover the treated area with plastic wrap to enhance the numbing effect (approximately 30 minutes).
  3. Soothing Care: After treatment, use calming products or cooling masks for post-care.
  4. Treatment Time: The treatment typically lasts between 15–20 minutes for the face, and 1–2 sessions may be required for body areas.
  5. Recovery: After treatment, the skin may form scabs within 7 days and heal within one month, although recovery time varies depending on the individual.
  6. Post-therapy Care: Avoid touching the treated area with water for 24 hours. Using medical masks, hyaluronic acid, growth factors, or tranexamic acid can help speed up recovery.

Possible Side Effects

After the treatment, patients may experience redness, slight swelling, and warmth. The side effects typically fade within a few days. In the first 2–3 days, peeling, redness, or breakouts may occur. By day 3–4, the skin naturally sheds dead skin cells.

Precautions

  • Skin Care: Aftercare products such as moisturizers and repair creams should be applied regularly.
  • Avoid Scratching: Let scabs fall off naturally-do not peel them off manually.
  • Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen to protect the skin from UV rays.
  • Limit Physical Activity: Avoid intense physical activities, swimming, and sauna sessions post-treatment.
  • Avoid Alcohol: Alcohol can extend the redness and hinder healing, so it is recommended to refrain from drinking alcohol for a short period after the procedure.

All in all, Gold RF Microneedling is a breakthrough in the field of non-invasive skin rejuvenation, offering tailor-made solutions for a wide range of skin problems with minimal downtime. It combines adjustable needle depth, gold-coated insulated needles and precise RF energy delivery to ensure effective, safe treatments for both patients and physicians.
