Working Principle
Vela-Shape is a noninvasive body contouring treatment for cellulite reduction, as well as the circumferential reduction of the thighs and abdomen. The most commonly treated areas are the thighs, buttocks, upper arms, and stomach. It can also reduce excess fat and mildly sagging skin under the chin.
Unlike most cellulite treatments that use one modality to treat the appearance of dimpled skin, VelaShape uses a combination of four: infrared light, bipolar radiofrequency (RF) energy, massage, and gentle suction. The suction brings the skin closer to the energy source inside the handheld device, working with the massage to help relax and stretch the stiff fibrous bands under the skin that cause the dimpling and orange peel texture known as cellulite.
The infrared and RF energies heat the skin, tightening tissue and making fat cells shrink and, in some cases, die. The heat reduces skin laxity by tightening the existing underlying dermal collagen fibers and stimulating collagen and elastin production, which builds more firmness and elasticity over time. It’s frequently paired with RF microneedling, to smooth and tighten the skin faster and more effectively.
Coolsculpting treatment is specifically designed to treat fat bulges on the upper arms, inner and outer thighs, abdomen, flanks, love handles, buttocks, knees, and bra fat. The procedure works through a process called “cryolipolysis,” which involves the controlled cooling of the fat cells in the treatment area. Fat cells freeze at a higher temperature than the surrounding tissue, meaning that the CoolSculpting applicator can cause fat cells to reach their freezing point while the surrounding tissue remains unaffected. When the fat cells freeze they rupture, where they are then metabolized by the lymphatic system. Velashape can reduce circumferential fat and cellulite in the abdomen, buttocks and thighs but is not primarily designed for fat treatment. As a result, Dr. Green will often combine CoolSculpting and VelaShape for body contouring, especially on the buttocks. CoolSculpting can be used to eliminate stubborn fat cells completely and then VelaShape works to decrease the circumferential fat in the area and improve the texture and laxity of the skin to reduce the appearance of cellulite.
VelaShape 2 and 3 are both non-invasive body contouring treatments that aim to reduce cellulite and contour the body. The primary difference between the two is that VelaShape 3 has improved its technology for better results and shorter treatment times compared to VelaShape 2. You might find the VelaShape 3 to be more efficient and effective in achieving your desired results.
VelaShape vs. Thermage, Which Is Better?
Thermage is another non-invasive treatment for body contouring and reducing cellulite, but it works differently than VelaShape. It uses a type of RF energy that goes deep into the skin and heats the tissue.
The heat boosts collagen production, a protein that helps keep skin firm and elastic. As more collagen is made, the skin tightens and looks younger.
Thermage mainly targets loose skin, so it works best for skin tightening, not for cellulite reduction, though it may provide the benefit of reducing cellulite.
This is where VelaShape has a distinct advantage over Thermage. As a multi-technology device, VelaShape targets cellulite in different angles: shrinking fat cells, improving blood flow, boosting collagen production, and smoothing the skin’s texture.
