Low-level laser therapy (LLLT), also known as cold laser therapy or photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy, is a non-invasive, low-intensity light therapy that has been approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to stimulate healing. In contrast to standard lasers often used in surgery to apply intense heat to make incisions, the light intensity in LLLT is too low to heat the body’s tissues.
Supports detoxification and removes fat that may stimulate weight loss: Low-level laser therapy liquifies the fatty content contained in fat cells and disrupts the membranes of these cells, inducing the formation of transitory pores that enable the liquified fat to seep out of the cells into spaces where the lymphatic system can begin to flush it from the body.
Reduces inflammation: Low-level laser therapy dilates blood vessels and activates the lymphatic system to drain swollen areas that are the result of trauma or inflammation.
Accelerates cell growth and tissue repair: Low-intensity light penetrates deep into tissues to accelerate cell reproduction and growth and increase energy availability to cells. It enhances cell metabolism by increasing adenosine triphosphate (ADP) production, which improves cell nutrition and waste elimination, which is especially effective in repairing tendons, ligaments, and muscles. It also stimulates fibroblast development in damaged tissue (fibroblasts are the building blocks of collage, the essential protein required to replace old tissue or repair tissue injuries), making LLLT especially helpful in treating burns and open wounds.
Increases metabolic activity: Low-level laser therapy stimulates higher outputs of specific pro-healing enzymes in blood cells, along with improved oxygen and nutrient delivery.
Reduces formation of scar tissue: Low-level laser therapy reduces the formation of fibrous (scar) tissue from cuts, scratches, burns, or surgery.
Enhances nerve regeneration and function: Low-level laser therapy speeds up the process of axonal regeneration and nerve cell reconnection.
Supports immune system function: Low-level laser therapy directly affects immune function by stimulating the production of immunoglobulins and lymphocytes and by improving the ease of penetration of white blood cells into damaged tissue.
Reduces reliance on medications: Low-level laser therapy is considered a safe, natural, and effective alternative therapy that may help reduce or eliminate the need for opioids and other analgesics, anti-inflammatories, and other medications that may have undesirable side effects.
Application of Low-Level Laser Technology Machine
Cold Laser and Low Level Laser Therapy can primarily treat the following conditions. These conditions are primarily musculoskeletal in nature, dealing with muscles and bone issues. But Cold laser therapy devices can also be used for cosmetic purposes. The following is a list of conditions that can be treated by LLLT:
Musculoskeletal conditions
Most chronic pain suffered by patients is usually the cause of a musculoskeletal issue. This could be caused by damage or inflammation in certain parts of the body: primarily in the joints. Opioids and other painkiller medications are typically used to alleviate some of these issues. However, constant medication leads to a risk of misuse and addiction (especially of opioids). Cold laser therapy can be used as a viable alternative for patients to alleviate ailments all over the body. These conditions can include:
Chronic back pain
A majority of adults experience back pain at some point in their lives. Some estimate up to 80% of the population.
Plantar fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is a condition where your plantar fascia, a band of muscle at the sole of your feet becomes damaged or enflamed.
Arthritis
Arthritis is a complication that can cause stiffness, swelling and pain due to inflamed joints.
Tendonitis
An inflammation of an individual’s tendons. Affected areas can include elbows, knees, heels and hips.
Body contouring
Low Level Laser Therapy also has uses in body contouring. Low intensity laser can be used to sculpt the body in a safe, non-invasive manner by stimulating fat cells and reducing cellulite. The procedure can be used in conjunction with liposuction as it can liquify fat and make it easier for extraction. Apart from this, it is helpful in shaping away the lumps caused by excess cellulite is parts of the body that are difficult to sculpt only be diet and exercise.
Acne
Cold Laser devices can also be used to treat severe acne issues. Some low intensity laser devices actually target the specific bacteria that cause acne and not just the skin cells. This takes care of the actual root of the issue and is not just a palliative measure.
Components of Low-Level Laser Technology Machine

Gain medium
The gain medium is the material in a laser used for amplifying light. It facilitates light amplification through the process of population inversion and stimulated emission. The choice of gain medium determines the laser's radiation characteristics.

Pumping source
The pumping source provides energy to the gain medium to achieve population inversion (the energy source for population inversion), enabling laser operation.

Optical cavity
The optical cavity, consisting of two mirrors, reflects light to increase the path length of light in the gain medium, thereby enhancing light amplification. It provides a feedback mechanism for laser amplification, selecting the spectral and spatial characteristics of the light.
Like any other machine, laser devices are not exempt from basic machine maintenance. These consist of a few things. Some obvious ones are visual inspection and cleanliness. Clinics need to inspect their laser device regularly to see if anything is unusual.
Devices must be kept clean, free of dirt and debris that may disrupt the functioning of the device. You must check the dust filter on a regular basis, and replace it as needed. You will also need to make sure that the handpiece and slider windows are clean. The chiller hose—for devices with one—must always be kept clean.
Additionally, clinics need to have their laser devices calibrataed and aligned. The energy output must be checked frequently, before and after usage. This is crucial to make sure the device works as intended with the proper precision and energy levels.
Some devices utilize a coolant agent such as cryogen. For such devices, we need to make sure that the coolant is centered and covering the laser beam. Otherwise, this may affect the precision and quality of the beam.
And finally, the most essential element is the lens. A laser device is a primarily optical device. Therefore, if the lens is dirty, the laser will cease to work properly. A regular inspection of the lens is crucial. Inspection must be done in a clean area to prevent further contamination.
A dirty lens requires cleaning right away. If you find damaged optics, you must take care to replace them as soon as possible.

How Does It Work?
Cold laser therapy involves low-intensity laser treatment that stimulates healing through light energy. As the light energy beams onto the affected area, the photons penetrate deep into the tissue and are absorbed. These photons cause changes in the tissue, which trigger healing responses on a cellular level. In other forms of laser treatment, much higher density forms of light are used to affect tissue, causing heat as a byproduct. The very low levels of light involved create the reaction without heating the tissue.
Through the diode of the machine, red or near-infrared light is beamed into the affected area. The energy absorbed stimulates changes within the cells. The cells absorb the light energy, which kickstarts a healing process. As different wavelengths of light reach the tissue, the cells react in various ways.
In addition to engaging the healing process, some data suggests that this treatment stimulates chemical changes. According to the research, cells seem to release various hormones, including endorphins, which reduce pain. The treatment can also inhibit prostaglandins and other neurochemicals. While some pain management techniques only mask the symptoms, cold laser therapy addresses the underlying concern.
What Is The Difference Between Cold Laser Therapy and Red Light Therapy?
Cold laser therapy uses low-level lasers or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to deliver light energy in the near-infrared spectrum. Red light therapy also uses low-level lasers or LEDs, but these emit red and infrared light. Because of how red light therapy works, it's better for skin conditions such as wrinkles, scars, and stretch marks. Cold laser therapy is more effective for healing beneath the skin.
